And some people oppose this? What. The. Fuck.

Source: Autoblog !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

"I think this legislation is very heavy-handed, totally unnecessary and according to surveys 84-percent of adults wouldn't dream of lighting a cigarette in a car, in a small enclosed space with a child present," said Simon Clark, the director of Forest, a UK-based "pro-smoking group."

Seriously guy? I smoke, I enjoy smoking, I'm about to smoke now, but I feel like a piece of shit when I smoke around children and I avoid it at all costs. I don't like smoking outside of a store's entrance for this reason, or even standing outside my car in a crowded parking lot.

Children should be protected from those 16% of smoking parents who would subject their kids to it. Yes I smoke now, but I hated when my mom used to smoke in the car when I was young. I even vividly remember telling her to quit one morning when I was 7 or so. I just can't imagine smoking in a car with a kid in it, let alone my own child.

I doubt anyone is arguing on the side of smoking in the car with kids, more just that there shouldn't be a law about it. Making a law doesn't really make anything stop happening, but it does reduce freedom and make a legal precedent. If only 16% would even do it at all, and of that probably another tiny percent would do it regularly, you have no made a law that gives police one more reason to stop cars and benefits virtually no one... because that subset of a subset can still do it, they can just be pulled over now.

The problem is that special interest groups use "think of the children" tactics as back door methods for just going after things they don't like. They rile everyone up as if it's the apocalypse, then say "if you aren't doing anything wrong, why would you care" and poof, something else is made illegal and rights are eroded just a little more.

My state already passed a law like this... and just like the laws against cell phones, it has done nothing and will likely never do anything beneficial. Except now if a police officer wants to stop you, he can say he thought he saw you talking on your phone, or smoking, or maybe not wearing your seat belt, or possibly weaving a bit, or looking tired, or having your windshield wipers on at a weird time.

I feel guilty about ever smoking with my girlfriend in the car. Her mom smokes so shes used to it, but still, it's a dick move to smoke around kids and non-smokers. Hell, the smell of other people's cigarettes bothers me at times.

I see your point, but this is one of those cases where I do think a law is necessary to protect the children. At the very least it's a law I could support, rather than click it or ticket which I think is bullshit and nothing but an excuse for trafic stops.

I actually have a combination LED flashlight, compass, and match holder (more like weed holder, TYVM) that I need to claim from them. Enter one contest and get coupons and free gifts every month.

After watching both grandfathers suffer (one's dead, the other will most likely be within a few days), I'm never touching those things.

However, I sort of want to light up an e-cig in my lecture hall and see what happens.

No doubt that it's horrible for you. I enjoy the act though, but I do want to quit at some point.

ridiculous to oppose it. I highly respect the guys here saying they would never smoke anywhere near children.

It is highly harmful to people, but even more so for children. A friend of mine grew up in a smoking household, and now has quite a few health complications directly related to growing up in a household with smoking parents.

I feel bad for her, it wasn't her own decision that has harmed her and it was still an avoidable thing.

Both my folks were chain smokers. In the house, in the car, they always had a cigarette in their mouths. I never thought much about it as it seemed all their friends smoked too. I just accepted it as normal.

When I first tried cigarettes though, I was repulsed. My friends told me it was "an acquired taste". Nope nope nope. Not for me. I did however go on to the "acquired taste" of cannabis, certain single malt scotches and rough se... I mean the various types of fun one can have with another human being.

Mom died of lung cancer two years ago.

I smoke more than cigarettes as well. Liquor though, well it doesn't like me and I don't like it. I like beer but I always have to turn down shots at the bar.

Sorry to hear about your mom.
